A shopping rebate is sales promotion technique used by marketers to boost up their product sales. The shopping rebate varies from product to product, and depends on time, and often place of purchase. A rebate is also known as discount.

The mail-in rebate, the best known rebate is an offer that entitles a buyer of a product to mail in a coupon, or a receipt and barcode in order to get a rebate of a particular amount on the bought product. Originally, the mail-in rebate was manufactures’ technique to encourage sales, by refunding the announced rebate directly to the customers rather than the retailers keeping it.

The rebates these days are offered by either the retailer or the manufacturer of a particular item. Sometimes large shops/retailers and manufacturers offer rebates on an item collectively. The rebates from manufacturers are sometimes valid only at a particular single store. Rebate forms and special receipts are sometimes printed by the cash register at time of purchase on a separate receipt or available online for download.

Rebates are heavily and commonly used sales promotion techniques in retail stores in the United States and Canada. Rebates are also highly popular in shopping online. Often, high rebates are offered on personal computer component, electronics and software programs. The turnaround time is generally four to eight weeks, though some rebates note a period of eight to twelve weeks.
